"For my family the word “fashion” means to make something. My father was a printer, my mother was a revivalist, so together they manufactured some products and supplied them to retailers. Then they started opening their own shops, the full vertically integrated formula was set and we (because I had joined the party) kept opening shops around the world, and opening print works and sewing factories to supply them.
At one stage we were the biggest industry in mid wales after farming.
The most enriching aspect of all this was the job creation. We had a family policy that any person working for “LA” was part of our extended family, this worked until the 10,000 staff , but then management took a more “ professional” approach that lacked class.
When China appeared on the scene and all our competitors switched production, we protected our staff/factories in Wales."
A Message to us from Laura Ashley UK on Instagram...

"I didn't meet my Grandmother Laura Ashley, but... I did meet my Grandfather Bernard, and he was half of the business. He was a mad maverick with a mission and he never let anyone push him down. When I was nine he had me designing prints for him!
As I have got older I have asked more and more questions about my Grandmother and I have realised she had a fierce strength that had a deep root in her loyalty, I definitely have this trait.
I think one of the things so often overlooked about the Laura Ashley story is that it was a company built by a Mother, Father, children and an entire Welsh community. Edie and I were lucky enough to experience the support of the Welsh people as children growing up - there is power in Wales and the power in the Welsh people!

"The inspiration for the prints can come from a diverse range of sources - the gardens surrounding Texplan, the hedgerows of Wid Wales, an archive Laura Ashley print or a small piece of wallpaper or fabric from earlier centuries.
Brian Jones, ...still has some of the original notes and examples sent by Mrs Laura Ashley. She was a tireless collector of items such as old fabric and lace, music hall posters, porcelain figures, old jar handles and books.
Brian has created some of the company's best selling prints including Alba Roses,
Orchard (based on an apple tree in his garden) and the paeony (inspired by paeonies at several gardens, including those of Powis Castle in Welshpool)."
Laura Ashley - "Mrs Ashley new exactly what she wanted, and she put her trust in us to adapt all her ideas."
Brian Jones - Laura Ashley Designer
S56 - One of Brian Jones' first prints "Mrs Ashley found on the back on an old photograph frame"
B1623 - One of Brian Jones' first prints "Japanese style motifs, she found in her research"
S57 - One of Brian Jones' first prints "taken from the inside cover of a very old book she found."

This section will give you a guided tour of our own home. It will show how we have used Laura Ashley designs from over 6 decades mixed together.
I have been collecting Laura Ashley memorabilia for many years and, following the closure of the company in 2020, I decided to catalogue these as a permanent record of Laura Ashley and her amazing creativity.
Usually the story of fashion is the story of the rich, but Laura Ashley designed affordable and beautiful clothes for ordinary people. Born in 1925 in Merthyr Tydfil, she came from a frugal welsh background, with a tradition of weaving, patchwork and hand quilting.
This section of the Archive will include such items as Shop Memorabilia, Packaging, Advertising, Promotional Items, Ashley Family Memorabilia and anything else that doesnt fit in the other Archive Categories.
Other memorabilia which doesn't fit in the other sections.

ABOUT
Family & Home
Hello I am Karen, happily married to Des since 1983. We have 2 children who are both married and 2 granddaughters.
I initially fell in love with Laura Ashley designs shortly after my marriage in 1983. We have furnished our homes with Laura Ashley ever since but retained a deep love of their early designs.
New Direction
This led me to think that other people must share this passion and so, when I left nursing, after 30 years, and needed a new challenge, laura absolutely was born. My complete collection of Laura Ashley catalogues enables me to identify even the rarest design or item.
Grow & Recycle
We sell Vintage Laura Ashley home furnishings which we source from flea markets, charity shops, online sales and from people who contact us with items to sell. We also sell new items which we make using the vintage fabric.
We are also compiling an Archive which will be showcased on the website and hopefully at some time in the future be available to visit.
